The Role of a Councillor
Our Councillors are elected to the local council to represent their local community. Councillors have to balance the needs and interests of residents, the political party they represent (if any) and the council. The councillor’s role and responsibilities include:

* representing the ward for which they are elected
* decision-making
* developing and reviewing council policy
* scrutinising decisions taken by the councillors on the executive or cabinet
* regulatory, quasi-judicial and statutory duties
* community leadership and engagement

And above all, it is the job of the councillor to scrutiny procedures and stimulate real local involvement in how the council manages and delivers its business.

It is the job of a councillor to represent their community, including when things are going wrong with council related issues, if their involvement can be beneficial. It is not their job to resolve issues which could be handled by individuals, or which have no bearing on the council. So please, do respect our Councillors. Do communicate local issues to them which could be of benefit to the community. But please do not burden them with small issues if these could be best handled by yourselves.
