Sainsbury Planning Application for the Mini Cooper Site, Tadworth
January 2016 Update
Local residents will be aware that Sainsbury have decided not to proceed with the proposal to move to Tadworth and the site is now on the market for rent. The reason given is that the Inspector’s requirement that the store should close at 9.00pm was too restrictive, although it had been accepted by the firm’s planning consultants at the Hearing.

Looking to the future, although Sainsbury has withdrawn, the retail permission remains, so the premises could still be used for shopping if another retailer is interested. It could also revert to the earlier use.
October 2015 Update
Many will have heard that the Planning Inspectorate released its decision letter on 28th October 2015.

The appeal was allowed which means that Sainsbury can proceed with the new store and find a tenant for the land to the rear.

The decision is disappointing, but the Inspector concluded that trade will be diverted from Asda rather than from the local shops and that the existing traders will benefit from ‘linked trips’. We hope that this will be the case, although have our doubts.

The Residents Association will do what we can to support the local traders and ensure the centre continues to retain the current range of shops. We do not think there is a case for a Judicial Review.
